Initial sketches
The idea for the Apple Table originated from my girlfriend Nina who, about half a year prior to me building it, asked me to make her a table that holds a single apple. Although I agreed, it felt more like a joke highlighting my interest in woodworking and her love of apples, than an actual project.
About 6 months later, nearing the end of my first semester in the Furniture Program at RISD, I was assigned to design and build a small table. Naturally, having already been given the concept, I set out to build the Apple Table.
The table is made entirely out of cherry. It is structurally made up of 4 shaped panels joined by through tenons (a total of 6 on each of two opposing sides). The top, which sits inside of the 4 joined panels, is held up by 3 stretchers in an H-frame orientation.
The main table top has a dimple carved into its center which is meant to serve as a holding place for a single apple. The bottom of this carved top is completely flat which can be flipped which effectively changes the table's function from that of a podium for an apple to a simple night stand if so desired.
